August 2014

The children in Walton County will be heading back to school soon.  Everyone be sure to stay safe and drive slow as new children will be behind wheels getting to school via their own cars, some will walk or ride a bus.  Please slow down before school zones to posted limits. Save yourself some time and a traffic ticket for speeding through.

Parents make sure that you have the appropriate signage posted in your car to pick up your children before the afternoon of the first day of school.

Let's have one last week with our kids and make sure they are prepared and know what to do, have a key to get in the house, know how they are getting home (which bus and which bus stop).  Teach them about waiting until all traffic stops before trying to board the moving bus.  Ask them to stay in their seat on the bus and remain calm for the driver.

Have a fun year with the children of this county and their education.  Part of being a good parent is making sure the homework gets done, neatly and returned to the teacher on time.  Teach your child the standards of school, the rules of school and to be polite to the teacher.  It really is difficult  for one teacher when one or two children show signs of lack of training when adults are speaking.

We've got this folks!  We've paid our taxes toward a good school year, now let's see that it happens.

If you live in the area be sure to check out the informational event lined up for June 4th, June 11th, June 18

If you have a pet and live here June 21st  9am-12 pm would be a good time to plan for your pets in the event of a storm at Alaqua Unleashed. A free event to include: A Petting Zoo and face painting and local vets will be on site.  Sounds cool to me.

Alaqua Unleashed for those of you who don't live here is a great place to let your dogs run while you're here for vacation.  Located in Santa Rosa Beach, you and your dog will surely meet life long friends as all the animal lovers unite there.

June 5, 6, 7, 2014 is going to be awesome with the Billy Bowlegs Festival.  While many people want to stay in Fort Walton Beach for this event, rest assured that Walton County has better lodging accommodations for this event :)  You'll thank me later for this suggestion.  Still, without question, this has come to be a yearly event which people, pirates and festival lovers flock to.  http://www.billybowlegsfestival.com/index.php

Be sure not to miss Lake Fest June 7, 2014 in North Walton County, Florida.  DeFuniak Springs may be on to something here as there will be all sorts of activities around our beautiful round lake.  Notably many people heading to the beach miss our famous attraction but don't be fooled, you will see one of only two round, spring fed lakes in the world.  The only one in the United States is here in the heart of DeFuniak.  For more information please see http://www.nwfdailynews.com/local/lake-fest-among-dreams-of-defuniak-springs-mayor-1.259015

If you're visiting 30A area, please use the FREE Turtle Express.  Who wants to go on vacation to be stuck in traffic or trying to find a parking space?  Not me.  This great idea is free and you can even see where the turtle express is online so you will know when to be ready to board.  :)  Love that.Sunshine Turtle Express

WOW!  What a line-up of things to do.  Note this is just two weeks worth!

I've heard very positive feedback about these tours.  Keep them in mind as the temperatures are rising and everything is in full bloom.  It is the best time of the year to be taking these tours.  Grab a friend and travel a road less traveled soon!

Kudos to sowal.com for keeping up the event calendars for the Southern Area of Walton County  I quickly noted that this weekend is the Seabreeze Jazz Festival.

And Grayton Beach is hosting the Shrimp Boil  on Thursdays all summer long.......if anyone gets down there to that, please report back to me as to what a wickle pickle is?  Seacoast High School located at 109 Greenway Trail is having a fund raiser for Alaqua Animal Refuge tomorrow.  I hear that they will have a Shrimp Boil and $15.00 per plate.  Not sure about the time on that one but I do love shrimp and there is nothing better than boiled or fried Gulf Shrimp.  Happy, happy times!

There are a ton of live music events on the south end as well.   Thanks again sowal.com for that resourceful music line up.

On Saturday, Volunteer Florida will be in Santa Rosa Beach to celebrate AmeriCorps Anniversary.   Northwest Florida AmeriCorps and everyone from that event will be invited to help build a reef in support of the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance's mission to preserve our local watershed.  This will be fun and very educational for all involved.
And while many people will be at the Fred Gannon State Park over in Okaloosa County at the Estuary Festival, Walton County can plan to take the children out to that, the Marvel of Flight or perhaps the Jazz  festival.  ALSO, Northwest Florida State College in Niceville is showing Dance Facets (Friday and Saturday).  I have my tickets for this already.  I am looking forward to seeing the lights go down and the performers on stage.

Surely, I have not told you about everything there is to do this weekend.  If you're here, get out and take part in the great stuff that is available.

Tomorrow's Steak Dinner fund raiser will be done by the Rotary Club at Thrift Way.  And if you can get some tomatoes and fresh meats from Thrift Way a local grocery store.

The planning that goes into these colossal events that are held begins usually a year before the scheduled time.  I just want to give a shout out to all the people who work tirelessly to keep tradition and events in mind year round.  We have an incredibly diverse community of citizens and most of us only think about the weekend when we're checking to see if it is Friday at five yet.......thank goodness we have folks here who go out of their way to ensure that our quality of life, our commitment to charitable giving and sustainable living thriving.....even when we are too tired to care.
